Education in the Wake of a Pandemic: A Surprising Reality

Image
(https://tinyurl.com/2hsj6tsc) Many countries have adopted distance learning strategies, whether through the distribution of physical materials to students or the use of technology to promote online learning. Because of the rapid pace of school closures and the shift to distant learning, there has been little time for planning or contemplation on both potential risks to avoid and potential possibilities to seize. There are genuine dangers because many of these methods may be quite lonely and didactic when students are asked to sit quietly and watch videos, read documents online, or click through presentations. The poorest type of learning is to sit and listen passively, which is likely what most pupils have experienced during school closures. It benefits no one, particularly those who are the furthest behind. Teachers were given little or no notice that their schools were closing and transitioning to remote learning, which may be difficult for anyone. They've expressed their frustr...

Filipino Resilience Emerges When 'U' Begin

Image
Surviving months of famine, sickness, and bad crisis management is being celebrated as a sign of perseverance in our country once again.  It's no secret that the Filipino people have traditionally taken pride in their ability to survive natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and typhoon after typhoon. Why shouldn't they, after all? Being able to bounce back quickly after a setback while still offering assistance and warmth to others is a skill that everyone should strive towards.  However, the story changes  today, in the midst of COVID-19, we're all in precarious situations. Medical frontline workers must deal with the virus on a daily basis with minimal understanding and protection. Due to unemployment, many people are unable to meet their fundamental needs, such as food and shelter. Someone must be harmed in order for the educational system to continue. And, despite our best efforts to take necessary safeguards, the disease is spreading like wildfir...

An Open Letter to President Duterte – Preville

Image
(https://files01.pna.gov.ph/category-list/2021/11/10/duterte-ttp-nov9.png) HONORABLE RODRIGO ROA DUTERTE President Republic of the Philippines Dear Mr. President: I hope this letter finds you in good spirits. Even in the best of times, running a province is challenging. In these tumultuous times, running a country must be a nightmare. You have consultants who advise you on what they believe is the best course of action. You have adversaries who wish for the worst-case scenario. You have friends that pray for your health, and the Filipino people as a whole waiting to be led. You were elected with a promise to get things done. The resoluteness and anxiety that you instilled in the people of Davao actually provided comfort to the people of Luzon. We've finally found the man we've been looking for. Not simply fighting the usual poster issues of poverty and corruption, but also the more nefarious issues of drugs and crime. Issues which only you had the authenticity to battle.  We...

Precious Is So Precious, Here's Why

Image
Highly valuable and also well taken care of. Like luck that is rare. Like a star that is admirable. Just like gemstones, I am precious. You would never have thought that knowing me could be so beneficial. On every 18th of January, I’m reminded of the story of a baby getting crowned as soon as she was born. On top of her head sat her crown, not made of jewels, but of an umbilical cord. The cord that seemed like a royal accessory wrapped around her little head made it harder for her mother to deliver her normally into this world. She said that the C-section she had to go through was risky, but the baby girl was worth all her pain. For of all the things she held, nothing else was as precious as me. Being the first child of Engr. and Mrs. Tabangcura, so as the first niece, the first grandchild and the very first great grandchild of my maternal family, I was showered with lots of love and affection. My grandmothers wished for me to have a joyous and noble life. Consequently, they also perfo...
