During the Pandemic, How is Kannawidan Festival Celebrated?
Fiestas and celebrations are returning
as the Philippines begins to recover from the impacts of the Covid-19 outbreak,
providing Filipinos with a much-needed dose of levity. Kannawidan 2022, a
series of activities aiming at celebrating life and sharing joy, was officially
launched by the province administration of Ilocos Sur earlier this month.

The province government of Ilocos Sur, led by Governor Ryan Luis
Singson and Vice Governor Jeremias Singson, as well as members of the
Sangguniang Panlalawigan and officials and employees of local government units
and national government agencies, kicked off the festivities.
The Suyo Indigenous Peoples Community Group from Suyo, Ilocos
Sur, performed an ethnic dance called "Tadek Ken Balliwes" during the
opening ceremony, which is a traditional dance that symbolizes excitement over
victory, thanksgiving, and other significant events.
The first night featured a fountain show, a drone light show,
and a spectacular fireworks display from the top of the New Legislative
Building. The drone light show demonstrated Ilocosurians' determination not to
give up in the face of the pandemic. It was also an homage to all of the
frontrunners. Following that, the Quirino Stadium hosted a comedy night.

The Saniata Ti Ylocos beauty pageant was crowned on the second
day of Kannawidan, with Vigan representative Richelle Anne Presto standing out
and taking home the crown.
On the same day, the 'Chef Wars Cooking Competition' was
conducted to demonstrate the originality and expertise of budding chefs. State
Polytechnic College of Ilocos Sur-Sta. The main prize for the college category
went to Maria Campus, with Divine Word College of Vigan coming in second and
University of Northern Philippines coming in third. In the industry category,
the team from Du-Lang Restaurant won first place, with Ichtus Beach Resort and
Bugis Bistro finishing in second and third place, respectively.
The LGBTQ Night on the third day brought the event to a close.
The program ended with "Your Face Sounds Familiar, The Lip Sync
Battle." The grand champion was John Angelo Malamion, who impersonated
Nicki Minaj.

Aside from competitions, the Kannawidan Festival featured a dog
show with American bulldogs, a car and motor show, Tinattoan, a bike racing,
game birds, a rhythm fest, and the much-anticipated Bakbakan sa Ilocos Sur.
All visitors to the Tamag Grounds and other Kannawidan Ylocos locations are required to wear masks and show proof of vaccination and identification. During the 15th Kannawidan Ylocos Festival 2022, the province government of Ilocos Sur assures that minimal public health and safety procedures are maintained and followed.
